Gluten free in Lindsborg, KS

There is wheat on the street!

 The wife and I just got back from a great quick trip to Lindsborg, KS.  Also known as little Sweden.  We had a limited amount of time without the kids so we decided rather than go to Kansas City, we would try something closer.   We had fun in the salt mines of Hutchinson and had dinner in Yoder.  We stayed in Mcpherson and spent a lot of time in Lindsborg.   We didn’t know these cities before, but ended up having a lot of fun in them.  There was wheat everywhere, even up on the lampposts but we managed to find a few gems. 

Our favorite one was The Brick House Grill.  We asked around for gluten free food and this was the only place that might have offerings.  The building was a little larger than an outhouse and it was packed with about 40 people.  They offered gluten free buns to go with their juicy burgers and thick bacon.  We went for lunch…and dinner. 

I devoured a burger with Swiss cheese, grilled mushrooms, bacon and grilled onions.  My wife also had a bacon cheeseburger.  We both enjoyed tater-tots. (no dedicated fryer) and felt no ill effects afterward.   The owner knew a lot about gluten free fare and was excited to have us there. 

That night my wife had a huge steak burger and I had a pizza.  Once again the place was packed. We ended up hanging out with several other diners.  One couple told us the dangers of the big cities like Wichita.  They told us there was a shooting every day.   I agreed but I also said I’ve never seen one.  Hilarious.  My pizza was just a regular cheese pizza and I was impressed.  For a town of 3,000 they offered up such overachieving food.  (Note the pizzas are only available in the evenings.)

All in all, the Brick House Grill was a terrific find.  Thick Bacon, tasty burgers and a kind, knowledgeable staff make for a happy eater.    

If you go to Lindsborg make sure you check out the downtown.  There is a great store called “Small world” with photos from a National Geographic photographer.  There are art museums everywhere as well as other fun diversions.  Make sure to check out Coronado Heights, castle.  Worth the trip.

Mulligans pub: Best Pizza I've had in Wichita

Tucked behind Noodles and Company and all the hubbub that is north Rock road is a nice little pub called Mulligans.  Behind it's normal looking facade is an awesome secret...really good gluten free pizza.

The toppings are buried below the cheese but they are plentiful.

Now I have a pizza I actually like in town!  Hooray!  Welcome Mulligans Irish Pub! A friend of mine, Nick Storms, is friends with ownership.  He said they started making gluten free just for him.  The waitress said they only really serve it to one person. (probably Nick!)

When is the last time your pizza was more than personal size?

Anyways,  It was around $12 for a medium pizza which was a good size. (enough for two people)  The sauce is not over-spiced and very even.  The crust is a little on the thin side and a crispy but it doesn't taste like a tortilla or anything.  It's also slightly sweet.  The toppings were generous...seriously generous.  They should not call them toppings but MOUNTAINS of delight.  3 Toppings came with the pizza too!

The guy who cooked our pizza was new and burned it on the edges so the lady from the bar brought out the pizza and said we could eat it while we were waiting for them to make a better one.  It was really nice and I appreciated the willingness to take care of us.  Some places just say "deal with it."  I promised them I would send them more people hungry for gluten free pizza.  Hopefully they will add other things to the menu because the price is right and the people are nice.  Please go there soon!  We need to support places like this.  I would also call ahead since it seems like they are not used to serving a lot of people.  I would caution you to be patient with them and explain to them your intolerance as to help them learn as they go along.

Gluten Free Pizza at Godfather's

I have been calling Godfather's pizza for about a year, pleading with them to introduce gluten free pizza in Wichita.I have sent annoying emails and now they finally offer it and my first response is...meh.

First I will start with the Pros:
They have a nice sticker that says precautions for those who are needing gluten free.  They also have signs which speak to the danger of cross contamination.
The pizza is around the same price as the regular.

Cons:
Not great.  Very thin and not filling.  I ate the whole pizza and was still hungry, which is not great for 9.95.  I am also not a big fan of the over-spicing they do.  Whatever happened to subtlety?

I really want to encourage companies to make gluten free so I hope you will go and try it for yourself.  If you like it, please post that on here.  We really need to show companies that we are loyal, even if it is mediocre we should give them a try.  I also will say that they told me it would take 30 minutes to make it and I showed up around 25 and it seemed to have been ready for a while.  Maybe it is better hotter. 

For now, I will stick to my frozen crusts.  Also Godfather's is far from our house so hopefully another company like domino's or papa johns will give gluten free a try. 

What was your favorite pizza place in Wichita before your diagnosis?  Lets figure it out and call them till they make it gluten free!

I just checked the website and it says it's available. I am suuuuuper excited about this development. Has anyone tried it yet? Is it any good? Do you know the price?
I plan on going soon, now.

Yia Yia's Italian Bistro, Mama mia, it's made to order

I don't think I am very classy. I am the guy that picks out anything but iceberg lettuce from my salad. I wear flip flops to a fancy restaurant. So goes my disclaimer for when I go to a fancy restaurant. (It was our five year anniversary and first time out of the house together without baby) I had a gluten free Pizza at Yia Yia's and didn't dig it too much. It had all these fancy spices and no red sauce. Very fancy. Not my style. I still would prefer a regular cheese pizza. It was also a bit dry and crumbly anyway.

However, they had some other things on the menu. We brought our own pasta just in case, which was awesome since they ran out of gluten free pasta. Ashley had some buttery sauce with Chicken that I liked a lot. I am sure next time I go I will enjoy my pasta but I am not getting the pizza. yechh. I'm still not classy.
