Gluten free at Spangles?

Sent a fruitless letter to Spangles to see if they had any gluten free options.

The response basically said they are trying to figure out how to list the allergens well.
They thanked me for my idea of offering a gluten free menu but said they are not presently working on one.  If only they knew how fiercely loyal celiacs are.  If you would like to change this, make sure you send them a letter.  I believe the more we contact companies the more they will offer.

Maybe I should start writing Starbucks and asking them to bring back the gluten free orange cake. Mmmmmmm....Orange Cake.

  1. Getting my pen. I hate that spangles has nothing at all I can eat. Big bummer.

  2. I follow your blog because my family has a history of celiac, and I imagine it's just a matter of time before I will need to follow a gluten-free diet as well. However, the reason I am responding is I am the Nutritional Coordinator for Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers, and would be happy to talk to you about our gluten-free options. I don't want to go into detail here, because I wouldn't want you to think I'm trying to advertise for Freddy's. I just want you to know there are options for you in Wichita in the fast casual segment, and our restaurants have made a concerted effort to educate ourselves in ALL food allergies. (Of course, celiac being near and dear to my heart, I have been beating that drum for several years!) If you are interested in our information, please e-mail me directly at valc@freddysusa.com.

  3. My 16 year old daughter literally got tears in her eyes when I read your post to her! She was just diagnosed with Celiac in May (2011) and misses being able to go to Freddy's more than ANYTHING else! The fact that she may be able to someday enjoy a burger (even without the bun) and fries gives her more hope than you can ever know.

Her world has been flipped upside down and food is such a part of socialization, especially for teens. Thank you for everything you're doing.

  4. There are lots of fast food options. Stay away from the fries at Mcdonalds, yep, wheat.

Maybe I should do a better post about fast food.

I think five guys so far has been the best i've experienced since they have a dedicated frier for the fries.

  5. I agree with celiac being very loyal customers. I am so disappointed in Spangles but am thrilled with Freddy's making a continued effort. It is a huge deal to have a dedicated fryer? That would be awesome

  6. Some companies like PF Changs just get it. Others will eventually see the dollars in it and get in late. Hopefully they get in sooner than later.

  7. I also contacted Spangles about gluten, and they responded with an email that listed the ingredients for many of their foods. I was very pleased with their response, and often go there for their turkey turkey (without the pita), and add a little BBQ sauce to it.
