The Best Gluten free grocery stores in Wichita

I have been asked about this by several people so I thought I might share in a post.

1.  Food For Thought -
This place is by far the best. They have an amazing frozen section that has GF corn dogs, muffins, fried chicken, pies etc.  It is of course expensive but if you want a treat that no one else has, this is the place to go.

2. Green Acres- They are expanding and they already have an awesome section where they make fresh baked good. They are expensive but very good.

3. Whole Foods association- Before we moved to Wichita, my wife and I checked if there was a Whole Foods and were so excited.  They have great frozen bread.  Of course when we arrived we found out it was not the Whole Foods chain we knew.  This place is fine, just not what we expected.

4. Dillion's marketplace-  Make sure you go to the larger ones like the store on Central and Rock.  They have some better prices and a pretty okay selection.

5. Super Target-  They have a few things randomly throughout the store.  They have annie's gluten free mac and cheese for only $2.

6.  Walmart- I have been told the one on the west side has a section or something.  The East side does not.

If you know of other places, make sure you post them for us all.

  1. I don't remember the name, but the Indian marketplace near Rock and 37th has 25 lb bags of rice flour for $20. Not too shabby.

  2. Thanks for the information! I just wish I had remembered to check your site before I came back from Wichita yesterday! LOL

Oh well, going again on Saturday so I'll be sure to check some of these out. Dillon's Marketplace is the only place I've been to so far.

  3. I've found great prices on many GF flours in local Asain markets - sweet rice flour, potato starch, white rice flour, & tapioca starch. Also they have many kinds of rice (try red or black rice - flavor!) and rice noodles. The west Kellogg Walmart does have a GF section - even have Thin Thin bars (like GF slim fast bars) that are GF. Love the large selection of GF in the Dillon's Marketplaces healthfood section, and Dillon's also labels on the shelf tags for GF items throughout the store. Also Sam's club is doing a good job of labeling for GF on many of their Maker's Mark store brands, and have a large selection of labeled GF deli meats.

Being GF only since Oct 2009 and daughter diagnosed in Oct 2010, I've seen alot of momentum in the local GF food offerings in just this short time. Goodness knows we need economical GF food offerings!

I agree - now we need a GF bakery in town. The Wild Thyme shop in Maize and d'Sozo on S. Seneca are two nice n' healthy home-grown cafes in Wichita where it's easy to be GF. Thanks for your blog and keep it up!

  4. I love the Indian and Asian markets as well. Besides all the flours I get lots of rice or tapioca noodles for VERY cheap!

  5. I'm thinking this needs a serious update since it is 2019 and several places have closed (Food For Thought and Indian Emporium), boo hoo, and both Walmart and Dillons have increased their GF selections. Plus, we now have scads of health food stores that all carry GF - we have the Green Acres Markets (they bought out the Whole Foods Association stores to add to their original store off of 21/Rock - so now that includes one at 21/Amidon area in Clearlakes Shopping Center, one out West at 21/Maize (SW corner), as well as Kansas City and elsewhere...oops, almost forgot the one at Normandy Square, Central & Woodlawn.). We now have a Whole Foods Market (different company from the original Whole Foods Association that we had), and we have two locations of the Natural Grocers/Vitamin Cottage stores - on N. Rock Road about the 1600-1700 block on the west side, and on the NW corner W. 13th and Maize Road.

India Emporium at 37th and Rock closed in the Fall 2014 I think, was so sad to see it go. I occasionally make the trek out west to Thai Binh Supermarket in the 21/Amidon area - still an awesome place for many varieties of gluten-free products!

D'Sozo on South Seneca closed a few years ago and that whole end of the shopping center they were in has been remodeled into two or three smaller stores, none of them "healthy". I am not sure if Wild Thyme is still open either, I've not seen anything on them in social media, and at one point they kinda quit the restaurant part and were just focusing more on catering or carryout. So we quit going there.

New "healthy home grown" type cafes - "Kind Kravings" is a gf food truck that I hear about but have yet to catch. Lotus Leaf is a nice restaurant cafe with many GF options, located in Old Town. Meddy's has three locations (one is about to re-open after being closed for a fairly extensive remodel the past three months), and they are not specifically gluten free, but they will substitute vegetable sticks in lieu of Pita chips/wedges when one wants to enjoy baba ghanoush or hummus (which are both essentially gf so far as the ingredients - but again, I won't claim that they haven't been exposed to some gluten. But it seems to work for my finiky system and I'm not even a full-blown diagnosed official celiac at all... I do have my intolerances at times, so I guess I'm borderline?? I have friends who are, so I try to be aware when I am shopping or at a restaurant and notice if GF options are offered.

I'm trying to think, pretty sure there are some other restaurants that have GF options, but I won't remember them until I send this off to be posted. I've no idea if anyone even reads this page any more???
